Governor McDonnell Announces Microsoft Expansion in Mecklenburg County

~Original Project in 2010 was Largest Economic Investment in History of Southern Virginia; Up to $500 Million Investment Created 50 Jobs~

$150 million Expansion will Create 10 Additional New Jobs; Continue Growth of Company in County

RICHMOND – Governor Bob McDonnell today announced that Microsoft Corp. will invest an additional $150 million to expand their generation data center (Gen4) site in Mecklenburg County. The company will build an additional facility and add 21 MW of electric power capacity to the site. The project will create 10 new jobs. Microsoft’s original project in 2010 involved an investment of up to $499 million and 50 new jobs.

Speaking about today’s announcement, Governor McDonnell said, “In 2010 I announced Microsoft’s plans to establish its most advanced data center in Mecklenburg County, which represented the largest economic investment in Southern Virginia history. Just one year later, the company is making another significant investment to expand the operation site and add electric power capacity. Securing this state-of-the-art data center was an important win for the Commonwealth, and additional growth will further establish Virginia as an Information Technology leader.”

“As a crucial corporate partner to Southern Virginia, I congratulate Microsoft Corp. on this additional investment in its Mecklenburg County site,” said Jim Cheng, Virginia Secretary of Commerce and Trade. “The company’s innovative data center design increases efficiency of operations, and this expansion will enhance the high-tech capabilities already in place as Microsoft continues to grow its operation.”

Founded in 1975, Microsoft (Nasdaq “MSFT”) is the worldwide leader in software, services and solutions that help people and businesses realize their full potential.

“Microsoft is excited to once again expand its cloud infrastructure and services capacities in Boydton,” said Dayne Sampson, corporate vice president, Microsoft’s Global Foundation Services group. “We greatly appreciate the work that Virginia’s Governor and local officials have done to make the Commonwealth a great place for Microsoft to continue to invest in to enable the best possible delivery of services to our current and future customers.”

“In 2010 when Microsoft announced its decision to locate in Mecklenburg County it did that for a good reason,” said Glenn Barbour, Chairman of the Mecklenburg County Board of Supervisors. “They saw in Mecklenburg County a progressive and business friendly environment. A County that was prepared to take its economic development into the future and provide a better economy for its citizens. Considering this economic climate the new announcement by Microsoft is astounding. We extend our well wishes for the future of Microsoft and appreciate its confidence in Mecklenburg County as a local government willing to provide for its needs now and in the future. Thanks to Wayne Carter, Angie Kellett and all the other staff of Mecklenburg County for their untiring efforts to expand our economy and grow our technology sector.

"Today’s announcement that Microsoft will make another investment to expand their operation in Boydton is great news for Mecklenburg County and Southern Virginia,” said Congressman Robert Hurt. “Not only will this expansion bring much needed jobs and economic growth to the area, but it will also help ensure that Virginia remains at the forefront of the high-tech industry.”

“I believe that Microsoft has made this additional investment to the Mecklenburg site because they have found the region a good place to do business and the County and community have been good partners with which to work,” said Senator Frank M. Ruff, Jr. “We all look forward to a long lasting relationship that will serve the company and community well."

“I am pleased that Microsoft has seen fit to expand their current business operations in Mecklenburg County, including the new investment of $150 million in plant infrastructure and equipment and the 10 new jobs to this community,” said Delegate Tommy Wright.

Governor McDonnell Announces 150 New Jobs for Mecklenburg County

~Home Care Industries, Inc. to open manufacturing operation; Largest Supplier of Floor Care Accessories in North America~

Virginia Beats out North Carolina, Mississippi and South Carolina for Project

RICHMOND- Governor Bob McDonnell announced today that Home Care Industries, Inc., one of North America’s leading floor care companies, will invest $1.5 million to open a manufacturing and distribution operation in Mecklenburg County. The project will create 150 new jobs. Virginia successfully competed against North Carolina, Mississippi and South Carolina for the project.

Speaking about the announcement, Governor McDonnell said, “Southern Virginia is on the rebound, and Home Care Industries’ new manufacturing and distribution operation is further positive news for this region. Mecklenburg County was able to provide a building to meet the company’s infrastructure needs, as well as convenient proximity to Home Care’s plant in North Carolina. I welcome Home Care to Virginia and look forward to working with them in the future.”

“I congratulate the largest supplier of floor care accessories in North America on calling Mecklenburg County home to its first manufacturing and distribution facility in the Commonwealth,” said Jim Cheng, Virginia Secretary of Commerce and Trade. “Home Care Industries supplies key accounts and national retail chains that are major household names, and I am pleased the company will have a presence in Southern Virginia.”

Headquartered in Clifton, New Jersey, Home Care Industries, Inc. was founded in 1959 as a vacuum bag manufacturer. Home Care has established itself as the pre-eminent supplier to the floor care industry through innovative product design, superior quality and unsurpassed customer service.

“We are extremely excited about the expansion opportunities presented to our business by partnering with the Commonwealth of Virginia,” indicated Robert J. Logemann, President and CEO of Home Care Industries. “Virginia offers us both the infrastructure and qualified workforce needed to support our growth plans, which, as we all know, is essential in today’s uncertain economic environment. The Virginia Economic Development Partnership team took the time to understand our needs and worked with us to build a comprehensive and attractive incentive package that made Virginia the clear choice.”

The Virginia Economic Development Partnership worked with Mecklenburg County to secure the project for Virginia. Governor McDonnell approved a $150,000 grant from the Governor’s Opportunity Fund to assist Mecklenburg County with the project. The Virginia Tobacco Indemnification and Community Revitalization Commission approved $390,000 in Tobacco Region Opportunity Funds for the project. The company is eligible to receive state benefits from the Virginia Enterprise Zone Program, administered by the Virginia Department of Housing and Community Development. The Virginia Department of Business Assistance will provide training assistance through the Virginia Jobs Investment Program.

"Mecklenburg County has once again shown it is very pro-business,” said Glenn Barbour, Chairman, Mecklenburg County Board of Supervisors. “With the great work being done by our Economic Development Director Angie Kellett and Wayne Carter, our County Administrator, we will continue to be aggressive in showing prospective industries that we have everything they need to prosper in our county. We look forward to Home Care Industries getting started soon and providing 150 jobs for our citizens. I would like to thank Governor McDonnell's office, the Tobacco Commission and the Virginia Economic Development Partnership for their support of the project. Also, thanks to our Board of Supervisors for having the foresight to purchase the Harden manufacturing building, putting our county in a position to have a facility immediately available for a business prospect."

"I am delighted that Home Care Industries has decided to locate in Mecklenburg County," said Delegate Tommy Wright, a member of the Virginia Tobacco Indemnification and Community Revitalization Commission. "The addition of 150 jobs and an investment of $1.5 million perpetuates the positive economic climate that Virginia offers. I am glad that the Virginia Tobacco Commission could play a part in helping Home Care Industries locate in Southside Virginia. We continue to see how all participants working together can bring very positive results."

Governor McDonnell Announces Microsoft to Locate Major Data Center in Mecklenburg County

Will be Largest Investment Project in History of Southern Virginia

~Company to Invest up to $499 million and Create 50 New Jobs~

Virginia Beats out North Carolina and Texas for Company’s Most Advanced Data Center

RICHMOND- Governor Bob McDonnell announced today that Microsoft Corp. will invest up to $499 million to locate their latest generation data center (Gen4) in Mecklenburg County, in what will be the largest economic investment in Southern Virginia history. Using modular technology and advanced cooling mechanics, the center will be Microsoft’s most advanced data center. The project will create 50 new jobs and Virginia successfully competed against North Carolina and Texas to secure this sought after facility.

“Microsoft is a household name and securing this global project is a significant economic win for Virginia,” said Governor McDonnell. “The company’s search process was long and competitive, and a great team of players came together to show Microsoft that Mecklenburg County was the right fit for its new version of a state-of-the-art data center. This project represents the largest investment project in the history of Southern Virginia. It will further bolster the Commonwealth’s standing as a leader in the Information Technology sector, while creating new jobs for our citizens and spurring economic development throughout the region.”

Founded in 1975, Microsoft (Nasdaq “MSFT”) is the worldwide leader in software, services and solutions that help people and businesses realize their full potential.

“We are incredibly grateful for the support and work of the Commonwealth of Virginia, the economic development team, and local officials in Mecklenburg County, and are excited to announce that we will be building our latest state-of-the-art data center near Boydton, Virginia,” said Kevin Timmons, General Manager of Microsoft Datacenter Services. “This new data center will enable the best possible delivery of services to our current and future customers. My team and I look forward to engaging in the deployment of our latest modular solution in Virginia.”

Governor McDonnell approved a $2.1 million grant from the Governor’s Opportunity Fund to assist Mecklenburg County with the project. The Virginia Tobacco Indemnification and Community Revitalization Commission approved $4.8 million in funds. The Virginia Department of Business Assistance will provide training assistance through the Virginia Jobs Investment Program.

The Virginia Economic Development Partnership worked with Mecklenburg County and the Town of Boydton to secure the project for Virginia. The Mid-Atlantic Broadband Cooperative (MBC) provided invaluable assistance to make this project possible. MBC's open-access fiber optic network was a key component in Microsoft's decision to locate in Virginia, and will provide diverse fiber routes for connectivity to major carrier interconnection points in the Eastern United States. Dominion Virginia Power also was instrumental in securing this project. Access to an extremely reliable electric supply and competitively priced electricity from environmentally responsible generation sources were critical site location factors for Microsoft.

"Mecklenburg County is proud to announce the location of Microsoft in the Boydton Industrial Park,” said Glenn Barbour, Chairman, Mecklenburg County Board of Supervisors. “The selection of Mecklenburg County indicates that we are progressive and have the necessary tools available to offer in this high-tech age. We believe this selection by Microsoft will give our county the recognition it deserves in attracting future companies that deal in technology. We thank all the many partners who assisted us, especially Governor McDonnell's office. Thanks to the Tobacco Commission, the Virginia Economic Development Partnership, the Mid-Atlantic Broadband Cooperative and Dominion Virginia Power. I would also like to thank our dedicated and hard working staff for their diligent efforts in bringing Mecklenburg County forward to the 21st century."

“I am delighted that the County, the Tobacco Commission, and Governor McDonnell's office worked well together for the good of the region,” said Senator Frank Ruff, a member of the Virginia Tobacco Indemnification and Community Revitalization Commission. “It is great that a company of the stature of Microsoft has seen what Mecklenburg County has to offer.”

"I am excited and thankful that Microsoft chose Mecklenburg County to locate it newest data center, resulting in new jobs and millions of dollars in investment," said Delegate Tommy Wright, a member of the Virginia Tobacco Indemnification and Community Revitalization Commission. "The future for economic development in Mecklenburg County and Southside Virginia is much brighter due to this successful collaborative effort."

Delegate Terry Kilgore, Chairman of the Virginia Tobacco Indemnification and Community Revitalization Commission, also remarked, “The Tobacco Commission is excited about this investment in Southern Virginia. Microsoft’s decision to locate in Mecklenberg County is a huge investment in the area and will bring much needed economic activity and development to the region. We applaud the McDonnell Administration for their hard work in persuading Microsoft that Virginia, and more importantly Southern Virginia, really is the best place to do business.”

“We’re very proud that our advanced fiber optic network will support the high capacity, diverse routing and low latency requirements of Microsoft’s new data center at the Boydton, Virginia GigaPark,” said Tad Deriso, President & CEO of the Mid-Atlantic Broadband Cooperative. “Our GigaParks are a perfect example of how private sector companies like Microsoft can benefit from an advanced telecom infrastructure in a region with a low cost operating environment.”

“Along with serving our existing customers well, we believe it is important to help attract new businesses that bring good jobs and economic growth to Virginia,” said Dominion Virginia Power CEO Paul D. Koonce. “We are pleased to have a part in today’s good news. We see Microsoft’s decision as a vote of confidence in our commonwealth and our people.”
